What Is LARC?

Long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) refers to highly effective birth control methods that provide extended pregnancy prevention without requiring any action from the patient.

LARC methods include intrauterine devices (IUDS) and the subdermal implant, inserted by a health care provider and provides protection for 3-10 years, depending upon the product selected.

Types of LARC

Hormonal IUDs

Release small amounts of progestin (levonorgestrel) to prevent pregnancy. FDA-approved options include Mirena (up to 8 years), Liletta (up to 8 years), Kyleena (up to 5 years), and Skyla (up to 3 years). They may also reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps.

Copper IUD (Paragard)

The only hormone-free IUD that uses copper to prevent fertilization. Effective for up to 10 years.

Subdermal Implant (Nexplanon)

A small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm that releases etonogestrel. Effective for up to 5 years. The single most effective reversible contraceptive available, with a failure rate of less than 0.1%.

Why Providers Choose LARC

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends LARCs as first-line contraceptive options for most women, including adolescents and nulliparous patients, due to their safety, efficacy, and ease of use.
